If you're thinking about a career in engineering, why not think about Cal State Bakersfield first?

You can get a head start at CSUB studying mathematics and science courses which form the foundation of the engineering major. Then, you can complete your studies at one of several engineering programs within the California State University 20-campus system.

What are the advantages of coming to CSUB first? There are many. Cal State Bakersfield students enjoy exceptional opportunities to work closely with faculty. Classes are small and promote particilation and interaction between students and with faculty. The student ratio in the engineering core courses is the best in the CSU. Classes are generally limited to 24 students in each section.

The faculty at Cal State Bakersfield are dedicated to undergraduate teaching. Most have completed their doctorate degrees and have done considerable scholarly research, but they are committed to teaching and that makes a notable difference in the classroom. You will discover a supportive environment that leads to learning.

Furthermore, CSUB students who complete foundation courses for the engineering major are given special consideration when they apply for admission to engineering programs at other CSU campuses. This can be an important advantage at those campuses that receive many more applicants than they can admit, such as Cal Poly San Luid Obispo. With SLO, CSUB has an agreement that given our students "special consideration" for obtaining admission. Students who want to transfer to Cal Poly need to work very closely with the engineering adviser.

The Pre-Engineering Program at CSUB

The engineering curriculum at CSUB is designed to provide a solid foundation for professional engineering programs. While some flexibility is allowed, you should note that many mathematics, chemistry, and physics courses must be taken in sequence and not all courses are offered every quarter. Careful planning of course work is important. Be sure to consult the engineering adviser before registration each quarter.

The following course plans illustrate your options.

Plan A.

For well-prepared students who are ready for calculus. This two-year plan allows for completion of core mathematics, chemistry, physics, basic skills, and American Institutions requirements.

Plan B.

For students requiring pre-calculus and having no prior chemistry course. This two-year plan meets the same objectives as Plan A., except for Mathematics 302 and it excludes the American Institutions requirements.

Special Consideration for Transfer to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

For Kern County high school students, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo offers the most appealing engineering program. CSUB has reached an agreement with Cal Poly whereby CSUB students who complete the specified trnasfer program are given "special consideration" for admission. While there is no formal guarantee, completion of the following courses provides the student with a very strong assurance of admission.

Other Transfer Agreements.

In addition to the agreement with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CSUB has formal articulation agreements with CSU Fresno, CSU Los Angeles, and CSU Northridge.

Advising.

Once you have been admitted, you will work closely with Dr. Thomas Meyer. He serves as the university's engineering adviser.

Minority Engineering Program. (MEP)

The MEP program is designed to assist underrepresented groups (African-American, Mexican-American, and Native American students). For more information please contact the MEP office at (805) 664-2431. Sergio Guerra is the head of the Engineering Transfer Center and MEP program.
