Web Scavenger Hunt

 

Instructions:

Get a blank sheet of paper, number the rows 1 to 20.

Search the web to find each of the following. All answers must be found on the web even if you already know the answer.

Write the answer to each question or the information asked for. Show your answers to the instructor when complete, if incorrect you will NOT be told which answers were wrong.

You may work in teams of two or three - but only two computers per team.

First and second place teams will be added to the Hall of Fame listed below.

 

Here we go:

  1. The diameter of Pluto in kilometers.
  2. The name of the most recently launched X-ray telescope.
  3. A Hubble Space Telescope picture of Eta Carinae.
    (Show the picture to your instructor who will initial your paper if correct. If you show the instructor a wrong answer, he or she will probably try to ignore you the next time you claim an answer.)
  4. A page giving advice to first-time telescope buyers.
    (Give the name of the person or company giving the advice.)
  5. A description of the "Oort Cloud".
    (Explain what it is in one sentence.)
  6. The name of the largest volcano in the solar system. What planet is it on?
  7. The number of stars in the Milky Way.
    (There is no exact answer here, a vague answer is okay.)
  8. The depth of the Earth's ocean at its maximum.
  9. Large asteroids were numbered roughly in order of their discovery, Ceres is asteroid #1. What are the names of asteroids #2, #3, and #4?
  10. The name of the world's largest radio telescope.
  11. What is the current population of the Earth?
  12. The e-mail address of Michael Zeilik (the author of our textbook).
  13. The date on which man first stepped on the Moon. (Give the month, day, and year.) Also give the name of the man.
  14. The name of another star around which planets have been discovered.
    (Stars have funny names, things like "15 Ursa Majoris".)
  15. Who is the current director of NASA?
  16. A picture of the Keck Observatories (both of them in one picture!).
    (Show to instructor to get answer initialed.)
  17. The density of Neptune (include units).
  18. What does GSFC stand for? What about M57?
  19. A picture showing the "Cassini Division".
    (Indicate it to instructor to get answer initialed.)
  20. A picture of the Moon's far side.
    (Show to instructor to get answer initialed.)
