National Science Foundation Scholarship

California State University, Bakersfield has been awarded a grant by the National Science Foundation to fund approximately 40 needs-based scholarships to full-time students majoring in Biology, Computer Science, Engineering, Geology, Mathematics,and Physics.

General Eligibility Requirements

  • Declared major of: Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, or Physics.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident,national, or alien admitted as refugee.
  • Must be eligible for federal financial aid (FAFSA).
  • Full-time enrollment of at least 36 quarter units per year.
  • Must take at least one course per quarter towards major.
  • Must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better and have no quarter GPA below 2.0.

Lower Division Awards

  • New Freshmen, transfer students from community colleges, re-entry students, and current CSUB students, who have not yet completed the introductory course sequence in their respective major.
  • Must have a GPA of 2.5 or better on all college level work; 3.0 GPA if coming from high school.
  • Engineering majors are eligible for lower division awards only
  • Awards of $1,000 per year (up to two years)

Upper Division Awards

  • Awards of up to $6,000 per year (up to two years)
  • Must have a GPA of 2.5 or better on all college level work, and completed all introductory courses (or equivalent) for the major:
    • Math: MATH 201, 202, and 203
    • Biology:  BIOL 201, 202, and 203
    • Chemistry:  CHEM 211, 212, and 213
    • Computer Science:  CMPS 221, 222, and 223
    • Geology:  GEOL 201, 204 OR 205, and one of the following:  303, 306 or 307
    • Physics:  PHYS 221, 222, and 223

Other Academic Requirements:

    • Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in (and complete satisfactorily) at least one class required for the major (this includes cognates) each quarter
    • Maintain a cumulative GPA above 2.5 and a GPA above 2.0 in each quarter to receive the scholarship.
    • Lower Division students are encouraged to enroll in Math 281, Chem 281, CS 281, and Phys 281 when these courses are offered.
    • CSUB offers a number of orientation courses such as CSUB 101 for Science Majors, ENGR 160, 161 for Pre-engineering majors, and SCI 377 (Orientation to Graduate Studies). Scholarship recipients are encouraged to attend the relevant courses.
    • The School of Natural Science and Mathematics typically offers two seminar talks and presentations of interest to all science, math and engineering majors. All scholarship recipients are encouraged to attend.
