Institute Objectives
Improved Teaching in Ethics
The Kegley Institute of Ethics believes that quality teaching in ethics requires a commitment to understanding more than theory alone. Teachers and students alike must experience ethical dilemmas as they occur in real world settings. Thus one major task of the Institute is to maintain internship-type arrangements in business, medical, educational, and media environments. Further, Institute Associates regularly provide workshops on ethics education for both business and campus organizations. Associates are also frequently called upon to give guest lectures for groups ranging from the Sixty Plus Club to hospital residents to business administration classes.
Faculty Research
The Kegley Institute of Ethics provides faculty from a variety of disciplines a setting in which to pursue a better understanding of the ethical components inherent in their respective fields. Complete ethical analysis must be interdisciplinary. Just as a philosopher is not adequately trained to appreciate fully the complexities of profit-loss ratios, so individuals in business are not adequately trained to appreciate fully the "is/ought" distinction. It is only through mutual respect and cooperation that valid answers to difficult ethical dilemmas can be found. The Institute thus stresses such interdisciplinary interaction and strongly encourages joint research toward publication and teaching.
Community Service
The Kegley Institute of Ethics serves as a broad educational resource for the Southern San Joaquin Valley area. We provide consulting services for organizations interested in better understanding the value dimensions present in their enterprise. Further, the Institute hosts regular symposia on ethical issues relevant to all segments of society. These symposia are always open to the general public and often include area leaders as participants.
