UNIT 2 - Computer Basics

Hotkeys

Hotkeys are useful shortcuts to know to perform certain operations. They are a combination of two, or at most three, keys pressed together. Almost every application you use such as your web browser (firefox, chrome, safari, etc.) have hotkeys. Some more general hotkeys include the following: Selecting All (CTRL/COMMAND + A), Copying (CTRL/COMMAD + C), and Pasting (CTRL/COMMAND + V). An important thing to note is that if there is some operation that involves navigating a menu or more than on button press there is most likely a shortcut for it. All you would have to do is look it up yourself.

File Organization:

All modern filesystems on computers are organized in an hierarchical fashion. What that simply means is that files are organized in such a way that there can be subfolders (folders within folders), which can be thought of in levels. And a directory/file path is simply where that file is located.
"C:\Users\BryantDinh\Downloads\01_hello_SDL" is an example of a directory.

File Types

There a many different file types and all of them are distinguished their extensions. Extensions are located at the end of a file name and are preceded by a period. For example "doge.png" is a image file of what is most likely a popular internet meme.

Portable Network Graphics is what png stands for and it serves the purpose of storing image data. You don't have to remember what certain acronyms stand for but it is important to be familiar with what kind of data a file type stores.

Peripherals

Peripherals can be thought of as anything connecting to a computer (except power source). If you think about it, everything attached to a computer serves at least one of these purposes. To either input information or to output information. Your computer monitor is outputting information in the form of images and video. Your keyboard is inputting in what you type into the computer. The way your computer interacts with peripherals is through software known as device drivers. Most of the time device drivers are installed automatically without you noticing and other times they are installed through a CD that came with the peripheral. But on some rare occasions you will need to install a device driver yourself by using a search engine to fine the driver for the model of your device.
