COMMITTEE

Proposal

Terrace elementary school wellness committee proposal for 2020-2021 school year

After careful observation of the current wellness program at Terrace, it is important to set a solid foundation for the future. We at Kern Family Health Care recommend that Terrace Elementary form a school wellness committee. This committee will ensure advocacy for continuation of this program.

Why is it important to have a wellness committee:

  • Your school can pioneer the development and review of wellness policies at the local and state level.
  • The committee can promote community and professional involvement.
  • You will be in a position to advocate policies for school health programs, leverage funding, and resources for clubs and school projects.
  • Members of the committee would evaluate efforts and provide feedback on nutrition education, physical activity, and staff wellness to the school and the school district.

Functions of the wellness committee:

  • Carry out health and wellness assessments.
  • Strengthen the current school wellness program.
  • Introduce policies that impact the overall wellbeing of students and staff.
  • Set goals for school wellness efforts.

Who can get involved with the committee:

  • 6 to 12 dedicated members.
  • School nurses, students, and parents.
  • Student wellness advocates like cafeteria staff, custodians, and maintenance workers.
  • Community partners such as local farmers, the Home Depot, Walmart, and other local businesses.
  • Others include the health department, local coalitions, parks and recreation, as well as local youth-serving organizations.

What qualifies participants:

  • Have a passion for kids' health and overall wellness.
  • Participating businesses should have a positive influence on youth.
  • Have the ability to delegate tasks to others effectively.

Committee meetings:

The committee will meet quarterly to construct a team, set goals for the school year, give updates on achievements, review action plans, identify solutions, as well as celebrate successes, and plan for the upcoming school year.
