Final Project Proposal

- Anthony Russo -

ADA compliant web photo What is the name of your website?

Gobi Desktop, after the Gobi desert because I'm uncreative and steal from Apple's naming schemes.

What is your website about?

Fully web based multi-tool/personal cloud storage. See above picture as a reference (very much WIP depicted) for the kind of idea I am shooting for.

What is the purpose of the website

To emulate a desktop environment fully within the web browser while offering to store files (not for this project, but just in concept), utilize online applications, and otherwise boost productivity from a mobile online platform. (Mobile meaning moves around easy, not specifically for phones).

Who is your target audience?

Office workers, students, and professionals.

What information will you have on your homepage?

The "homepage" would be the main desktop screen which can includes custom icon divs to open other "application" divs by enabling their display values. It would also consist of a menu and task bar for ease of navigation.

What features will you have within your website?

Calculator, image viewer, "file explorer" that could just load the content of server side files (like the public_html) because I do not know how to facilitate the exchange of files in any meaningful manner as of yet, and maybe even an emulated "web browser" within the desktop within the web browser. (Some research on my part seems to indicate that loading the entirety of a page and it's styling and not just the content within a div ought to be possible, although we shall see.)

What do you want visitors to do once they're at your site?

Conceptually, they would be able to store local files to the quite literally "remote desktop" like DropBox while also utilizing a number of typical desktop applications such as a calculator and web browser to increase work flow.

What types of actions do you want your visitors to take within your website?

A sign-in would be necessary to ensure the security of the site and the customers' files. Browse the web without needing to change tabs away from Gobi, make calculations and compelte typical office work.

(Conceptually) Upload and download personal files.

How many pages of content will need to be developed and what is the purpose of those pages?

If Gobi were to replace an actualy desktop environment it would need probably close to 50+ unique window types for all the nuanced settings and features. For this project I would aim for around 12 "pages" with each page being a sub division with a customer application or feature that I have built in.

What is the layout theme of your website?

Frosted glass, as you could see at the top menu bar in the screenshot at the top of the page and typcially muted whites with a neat font I found online a while back. (this font would be used more for the logos/branding as it's difficult to read on menus). Likewise the theme would include depictions of the Gobi desert.

What colors will you be using for your overall theme?

White, black, blue and brown. Probably some green too. I plan to make the colors highly customizable with a script I found from an online repository.

What style of page navigation will your website have?

Menu bar, task bar, and possibly a sort of start menu.

Are there websites that already exist which are closely related to yours? What are they?

Not that I could find really, no. Commerically this type of project would probably be too ambitious and would fail given the limited number of applications that would be able to run in this sort of invironment (maybe Google Docs, Word Online, only really simple stuff and nothing too specific). ALthough the personal file transfer aspect is inspired by sites like DropBox and OneDrive.

What types of things do you see on other websites that you would like to incorporate within your website? Will you?

File transferring, no I will not include this. Don't know how and I dont think our server would like more stuff being added.
I would like to implement a color chooser that I found online that I can link to my HTML and JS and I would also like to implement a file explorer similar to the public_html.

What makes your website similar to others?

Not much, maybe the frosted glass effect that takes unnecessary computations or the file transferring if I was actually able to complete it.

What makes your website different from others?

The concept of a fully web-based desktop experience is rather unique in most regards.

What more can you state about your website?

I know it will be somewhat difficult but I have already put quite a bit of thought and research into the website and would really like the opprotunity to try and implement it while also receiving credit.
