Please meet Jennifer Burger from the Communications department.

What is your field of study?

My field is journalism and my work experience is in news reporting, feature writing and multimedia reporting.

What is your favorite class to teach?

I love to teach all my classes and wish I had time to teach more! First and foremost, I absolutely love teaching Comm 2160 and Comm 4160, News Production, and advising The Runner, the student news organization at CSUB. I also love teaching Comm 3130: Feature Writing because half of my journalism career was as a features writer for newspapers in California and I love telling true stories of the human experience. From this course last year, students produced a magazine called Converge – let me know if you want a copy.

What are you excited about this semester?

After much of The Runner staff graduated in the spring, we are starting this semester with a nearly all-new staff. I am excited about everyone’s energy, enthusiasm and readiness to hit the ground running!

What was the last book you read?

I just finished “Children of Blood and Bone” by Tomi Adeyemi. I am now reading “The Gang that Wouldn’t Write Straight” by Marc Weingarten.

What was your worst subject in school?

Science. The only C I got in college was in astronomy – so much surprise math.

If you had to make a documentary, what would the subject be?

Great question! I really want to make a documentary taking an inside look at the homelessness crisis right now. And by inside, I mean inside – embedded with people living on the streets, to tell their stories of how they got there and what needs to be done to help them.

What do you do for fun and relaxation?

I love hiking, backpacking, camping, cooking, photography, writing, reading, and going on adventures with my family, and my daughter's Girl Scout troop (which I am the leader for).

Do you have any advice or thoughts for our students?

Try new things! It’s OK to be afraid – be afraid and try them anyway!

What did you do over summer break?

While I did a lot of fun things with my family, the highlight of my summer was when I went with a friend on a five-day, 50+ mile backpacking trip on the Tahoe Rim Trail portion of the Pacific Crest Trail, from Eagle Falls to Donner Pass. (Yes, THAT Donner Pass. No, we did not have to result to cannibalism. But I did devour a western bacon cheeseburger and a pint of Drake’s Denogginizer at the end.)
