Why does an integer and a double result in a double?

An integer and a double results in a double due to type juggling. This happens to maintain accuracy, and it can be prevented by typecasting.

Why does a string and an integer result in a double?

A string and an integer results in a double here due to PHP parsing. It sees the 1.0 at the beginning and assumes it is a double numerical value, and, similar to above, the double and integer became a double.
