KIE Announces 2020-2021 Student Fellows

The Kegley Institute of Ethics (KIE) is happy to announce the selection of 2020-2021 KIE Student Fellows: Sergio Brito Solorzano (M.S. Student, Educational Counseling), Natalie Velasco (M.A. Student, Public Administration), and Brittany Johnson (Senior, Philosophy Major).

The KIE Student Fellowship Program is designed to support current CSUB undergraduate and graduate students in developing and implementing ethics-related projects for the CSUB campus and community. KIE Student Fellows learn about the operations of the KIE, gain experience organizing projects/events, and develop deeper understanding of contemporary ethical issues. Each KIE Student Fellow also receives a $1500stipend and mentoring from KIE Staff.

Sergio Brito Solorzano has a passion for ethics, social justice, and serving students from diverse backgrounds. As a KIE Fellow, he is interested in creating a speaker series featuring people of color (POC) raised in the Central Valley, or communities alike, who currently work at Google, Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram. Sergio wants to inspire students by showcasing that they too can land a job and advance their careers and communities.

A recent alumna of CSUB, Natalie Velasco received a B.A. Degree in Criminal Justice and is passionate about program reformation and advocacy for people under correctional supervision. As a KIE student fellow, Natalie will partner with staff to develop programs aimed to promote successful reintegration for formerly incarcerated students from prison to society. This work will include developing a peer mentoring program between CSUB students and students in a Central Valley correctional facility as well as the facilitation of events targeted towards correctional student excellence.

Brittany Johnson is a Senior at CSUB pursuing a B.A. in Philosophy with a Minor in Psychology. Brittany has a passion for serving her community and is dedicated to leadership, project management, and academic success. As a KIE Student Fellow, Brittany is interested in developing a panel for CSUB students on ethics, diversity, and inclusion in health care, featuring Central Valley healthcare providers. Brittany is also interested in exploring the sociological implications of COVID-19 and the pandemic’s differential impacts on communities of color.

Speaking about the Student Fellowship Program, Dr. Michael Burroughs, KIE Director, noted “we are very excited to work with our first cohort of KIE Student Fellows. My colleagues and I created this program to support the ethics-focused ambitions of our CSUB students. As is evident from our awardees, our students possess both deep and nuanced ethical convictions and, also, a commitment to serve our campus and greater community through innovative programming.”

KIE Assistant Director, Dr. Kallee McCullough, added “we are fortunate to have three outstanding KIE Student Fellows with projects that will explore ethical dilemmas from diverse disciplines. We are proud to provide support and mentorship that will facilitate the professional development of our awardees and contribute to advancing discussions about ethics broadly in our community.”
